a note to 2020 graduates
friday, october 16, 2020
dear tigers-
one of the most rewarding aspects of my job as president and one of the most anticipated of fhsu traditions are our commencement celebrations. there is nothing quite like the joy i see in the faces of our graduates as they are introduced and cross the stage to be recognized. that joy is best celebrated in person, but unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, we will not be able to host a traditional, in-person commencement celebration in gross memorial coliseum this fall. we will be hosting virtual commencement ceremonies.
while i am confident that a virtual commencement is the right decision, one that helps us safeguard the health and safety of our fhsu community and celebrate all of our fhsu graduates, it doesn’t make this message any easier to send or for you to receive. we are so proud of all your accomplishments, and to each of you who will realize a life’s dream and graduate this december.
i would like to offer you a special opportunity to celebrate your accomplishment by wearing your full regalia and take a photo with me on the fhsu campus. more information about this opportunity, including location and times, will be shared soon.
to our spring and summer 2020 graduates, please know that it has been our hope since may that we would be able to invite you back to campus for an in-person commencement celebration. since day one of this pandemic, we have consistently tried to identify ways to convert and not cancel experiences, including commencement, that are distinctive and memorable. we have had to find a new way to rise above the current challenges and celebrate our graduates the best way we possibly can.
in keeping with this commitment, on friday, december 11, the university will host five virtual commencement ceremonies for our spring, summer, and fall 2020 graduates, honoring and recognizing every graduate. these college-specific ceremonies are a way to keep things more personal and allow you to celebrate with the faculty, staff, and fellow students you have come to know over the course of your studies.
with deep pride for your significant accomplishment,
tisa mason, ed.d., cae
